We left Guadalupe Mountains Park before sunup and headed for El Paso. The one place where I10 follows along just a few yards from the Rio Grande River which forms the US/Mexican border it was quite a contrast to see the houses and streets of Ciudad Juarez just across the border fence and river. How thankful we all should be for our great country! In Las Cruces we made a brief stop for gas and groceries and continued on up I25 to Hatch. We then took what is described as a scenic byway from Hatch to Hillsboro along highways 26 and 27. We weren't that impressed. But from Hillsboro to Silver City along highway 152 was a different story.
It was very scenic but we couldn't help but notice how dry everything seemed for early spring. This also had to be the most winding 35 miles of highway we have ever seen with many 10 and 15 mph hairpin curves until we got to the San Lorenzo turnoff. In Santa Clara we tried to visit Fort Bayard but there are only two tours per month and we could only see buildings from the outside.
This fort served as a US Army post from 1866-1899 and then as an Army Sanatorium from 1988-1920. Now a new hospital has been built next door for special needs veterans. Once in Silver City after a 12-hour 320 mile day of driving we got permission to camp one night at Wal-Mart.
