Zuni Pueblo

Thu Apr 14
On our trip today from Glenwood we were blown all over the road by strong side winds but we made it and camped at the Wal-Mart in Gallup. On the way we stopped, unhooked the car and drove to Zuni Pueblo (village) about 10 miles West on highway 53, a little South of Gallup. This is a Zuni Indian village of 11,000+ residents that has been continuously occupied for centuries but the earliest recorded history involved battles with the Spanish Conquistador Coronado in 1540.

The village's main industry today is world famous art in various forms. What we saw at their visitor center, in their museum and at the Gallup Cultural Center in Gallup is indeed beautiful. In fact we plan to return tomorrow to the Cultural Center, located in the train station on historic route 66, to see more than we had time for tonight. In Zuni Pueblo we bought three loaves of Zuni bread baked fresh today in outdoor adobe ovens.

We got a loaf each of regular, sourdough and raisin breads and they are most delicious. Except for the raisin bread the loaves have a unique shape that is traditional.

The weather report is predicting lows in the 20's tonight and I'm thinking we need to head back to Arizona. We found wi-fi and called all the kids that were available tonight. To make the cold worse Lance said it snowed in Pocatello yesterday.
