Hiking and a Scenic Drive

Fri Jan 14
We had a laid back day. I did a little grocery shopping and Dad helped a neighbor get his Qwest modem programmed so they could get on the internet. Our neighbors behind us from the LDS Ward invited us over to play a fun card game called Five Crowns in the evening. Dad thinks its funny because their dog is named Bonnie.

We started the morning with a pancake breakfast provided by the park. It is apparently very popular every Saturday morning. While there we met a couple full timing from Oregon named Clark. We introduced ourselves as the Lewises they noted that we were then the Lewises and Clarks. After breakfast we drove up route 88 to the Lost Dutchman State Park where we took about a 4-mile hike. The trail began at the base of the Superstition Mountains and the first part climbed about 800 feet to a junction called Green Boulder. After the hike we drove on up highway 88 to where the pavement ends about twenty miles further. This is a very twisting scenic highway and I've never seen so many 10, 15 and 20 mile per hour curves in my life. The scenic highlight was Canyon Lake on the Salt River. We also visited a "town" called Tortilla Flat. It is a tiny western-themed town consisting of only about 5 buildings that is apparently quite popular. At one outdoor patio restaurant a live band was performing. In a souvenir shop I bought an Arizona cap. In the ice cream store we got cones of pecan praline, wild cherry and prickly pear. MMmmm good! We ended a very fun day with a soak.
