June 30

Today we traveled about an hour’s ride each way to and from Barkerville. This is a well-preserved historic town that began with the 1850’s gold rush and has pretty much been continuously inhabited up through the 1970’s when the government made it a historic park. There was a $13 admission but the town was amazing with many people dressed in old-time dress and acting out parts of the era. There were theatre plays, exhibits with live people including a blacksmith actually using a forge and making horseshoes, etc. We also watched a fun and educational demonstration of how gold is found and mined with a giant working water wheel and visited a school where we met the teacher and learned much from her. In addition there were many, many historical buildings to visit and things to see and do. On the way there we visited several other historical places along the old Cariboo gold rush trail including the Cottonwood House complex. With so much to see and do at Barkerville we got back to Wal-Mart camp quite late to move on so we decided to stay another night, try to find wi-fi and then try for an early start tomorrow.
