Goldfield Ghost Town

Sat Mar 12
We got a call from Gene early this morning to learn they are headed here later today. Then we headed a short distance up highway 88 to the Goldfield Ghost Town. This is the commercialized remnants of an 1890's gold mining town with many well-preserved buildings. There was no entrance fee but there was no shortage of ways to spend money.

Entrance
We had discount coupons that helped pay for the mine tour and a ride on the narrow gauge railroad train. The mine tour took us down inside a wobbly, rickety old elevator into one of the original mines complete with huge timbers to support the shaft and mining artifacts.

The train was not an authentic steam locomotive but the ride gave a view around the perimeter of the town site.

The gunfight and Old West characters were quite entertaining.

There was a nice museum, a church, a windmill and water tower, a bakery, a jail, a blacksmith, a saloon, a mercantile and other old time buildings along with plenty of shopping and eating places.

We finished off our tour with a delicious scoop of hard ice cream. While it had a ways to go to match Fort Steele in BC, Canada it was still a lot of fun.
